Stakeholders donate 16 vehicles, 40 motorcycles to beef up security in Ikorodu
A newly launched Private security outfit, Ikorodu Division Peace Initiative Limited (IDPIL), on Wednesday distributed 16 patrol vehicles and 40 motorcycles to security agencies to beef up security the area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the brand new patrol vehicles and motorcycles were distributed to all six police divisions and IDPI units in all the six local councils in Ikorodu division.
NAN reports that the security outfit us an initiative of sons and daughters of Ikorodu at home and the Diaspora, led by the Odofin of Ikorodu, Chief Adewunmi Ogunsanya.
Among the corporate donors to the initiative were FCMB, Zenith Bank and Multichoice Nigeria, whose Finance Director, Lionel Brits, donated N20 million on behalf of the pay TV conglomerate.
Speaking during the launch, Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP), Abiodun Alabi, commended the stakeholders and community leaders for the initiative aimed curbing insecurity in the area.
Alabi, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP Admin) Sam Ewah, urged the personnel of the IDPL to work in synergy with the police force.
“Nigeria police will continue to support this initiative for sustainability,” the CP said.
Also speaking at the event, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Shotobi, applauded the committee for a job well done.
The royal father urged the committee to intensify intelligent gathering, saying that security is everybody’s business.
According to the royal father, the initiative was due to increasing rate of crime and criminality in Ikorodu which was discouraging investors from establishing businesses in Ikorodu division.
Shotobi said that the initiative followed a decision of Ikorodu Traditional Council which set up a committee with a mandate to find solution to the lingering security issues in the area.
“I have to commend everybody for their contribution to the successful launching and unveiling of these security outfit: I am convinced this will go a long way in curtailing crime in our community.
“As part of the efforts to develop this division, the committee has also decided to develop education sector; they have acquired six acres of land for building vocational centre for the youths,” the royal father said.
Also speaking at the event, Chairman of the committee, Chief Adewunmi Ogunsanya (SAN), said the initiative was a culmination of many months of brainstorming and strategising among key stakeholders in Ikorodu division.
Ogunsanya added that the initiative was geared towards finding a solution to the lingering insecurity in parts of Ikorodu community.
‘We were left with no other option than to take proactive steps towards stemming this negative tide by engaging both native intelligence and scientific approach which gave birth to IDPL we are launching today,” Ogunsanya said.
The Chairman, Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Mr Durosinmi Etti, also encouraged IDPIL personnel to thoroughly maintain the equipment and ensure proper reporting of incidents and documentation as well as good conduct of personnel.
Etti, who was represented by Mr Adegbola Lewis, urged the personnel to imbibe maintenance culture for sustainable use of the equipment to ease their operations.
“With this initiative now, Ikorodu will witness robust development,” he said.
NAN reports that the IDPIL was unveiled by Mr Babatunde Folawiyo, CEO, Folawiyo Group of Companies, who was the chairman of the occasion.
